Today the president-elect of the United (divided) States will be installed to the position. He will swear an oath before the world. The lemmings cheer gleefully, and angrily, at their “victory”, unaware of what they’ve wrought upon the nation, and themselves. But have they won? Do they even care?
They, in their abject fear and loathing of the New Patriotism of inclusion, and equality, ran to elect a subversive, unctuous, snide, rude, obnoxious, immature cretin (who had some three million less votes than his opponent). They believe, actually, that he has got their backs. “He’s one of us”, they perhaps presume, because he, too, is white.
They assume that he is on their team, and with good reason, as he has flung chunks of the red-meat they so desperately crave. So desperate to cling to the “good old days”, and making America “great again”, they failed to see that the meat they’ve been fed is, entirely, toxic, and that the server couldn’t care less about that dangerous fact. Poor fools.
This isn't even about who "won" or "lost". If we've made a mistake in elevating this person, then we all lose.
Well, dear readers, I do not intend to re-litigate the myriad proof-markers of the inevitable official. We have had nearly two years (more if you’re from the northeast) of data, evidence, and history to substantiate the incalculable allegations of mental illness, corruption, and bullying. But what of the lemmings who really believe that he gives a care about them?
How many will be permitted to play-through on his championship courses? Be invited to his estate for burgers and beers? Can they seriously be that ignorant? There are none so blind as those who refuse to see. Worse still, are those who see everything but, because they have skin in the game, choose to ignore it. They do so at their peril.
In a recent Gallup poll, revealed on thehill.com, about the president-elect’s favorability/popularity measure, “President-elect Donald Trump has a historically low favorability rating ahead of the inauguration.
“According to a new Gallup poll, 55 percent of Americans have a negative view of Trump, making him the only president-elect of the four most recent presidents-elect whose unfavorable rating outweighs his favorable score.
“Of the 1,032 adults polled across the U.S. from Jan. 4 through Jan 8, 40 percent had a favorable view of Trump compared to President Obama, who enjoyed a 78 percent rating ahead of his inauguration.” Humans the world over, collectively, query--- “How can this still be happening?” How, indeed?
For the forty percent, clutching feverishly at “used to be”, the diagnosis is entitlement. The symptoms include: fear, rage, paranoia, anger, terror, and rejection of facts on their face. Theirs is a disease of denial, anxiety, and bitterness. A longing for days gone by. They are virtually, numerically, the new minority. Evolution, and karma, have anointed the browns, and all people of color, to grow exponentially, shifting the entire paradigm of oppression, freedom, fairness and equality. Who can blame them. Nobody likes to be usurped. Replaced. Especially rooted in immeasurable guilt, and culpability.
In the distant-past, which remains their touchstone, they fear that they sociological, and punitive table will be turned back on them. They resent the inevitable new dawning of our better selves as a nation. In unison. Theirs is a tattered sweater, a relic of a past of dominance and privilege they now miss--- one with which they cannot bear to part.
The cure has yet to be determined, however, for “The Fifty-Five Percent”, there is a clarity, an awareness, and a cautious optimism that our political system has a governor-, or kill-switch that can stop this nightmare cold. The agony of knowing that there will be a collision, the date, time, and being perfectly positioned to witness it all, is horrifying.
While they do not seem to have a choice, they do have a voice, “The Fifty-Five”. Rather than lamenting the inevitable, they invoke the possibility of rescue. They turn their back on that which has shamed them. They tune every television in their homes, and offices, to any channel other than those broadcasting inauguration events during the week. Comedy, animals, science, history, just nothing inaugural.
Why? Because ratings matter. Not just to the Nielsen group, but to political parties. If the ratings companies don’t see the televisions of the 55, as being turned on, they will only be able to measure the ratings of those who are watching the political program, implying blockbuster numbers. If powered up, they will detect the other televisions, theoretically, which are watching anything but the doings in D.C. Voilá! A voice!
In fact, I’ve taken to changing any channel playing anything to do with him, or his family, or that party. Sponsors, and producers, will get the message.
Another benefit of this digital, silent, protest, is avoiding the self-harm, anger, and pain of disbelief. What is the sense of watching the immolation? As for me, the distance-learning coursework with Harvard, and Hong Kong University for which I’m registered will occupy my every minute during the week-long political circus. The TVs will be turned on… but my attention, effort, and energy, will be focused on self-improvement, while we wait for this week’s sideshow to simmer down. As we just learned, circuses do not last forever.
In our own agony, incredulity, anger, fear, and outrage at our nation’s present trajectory, let us choose silent digital protest, righteous prayers of hope while awaiting the marching orders for the next phase. Let us spend that time helping and serving others. Not watching a fraud-in-motion. Let us spend that energy equity on improving ourselves.
This may just be the push that we need to be better, stronger, more deserving of, and grateful for the many blessings we do have. Maybe, it is an opportunity to kick ourselves out of the complacent, hopelessness we have come to accept of ourselves?
We may not have had a choice, in the external kidnapping, and malfeasance, waged in our election, but our voices remain. Sometimes the silent voices speak the loudest. I pray his every success in his new, vital role, for the betterment, and survival of the country. Otherwise, we could end up like so many of the failed ventures he has undertaken. All of us. Except, perhaps, the one percent.
God bless America.
