I'm not certain that I'm buying it. Even the prison staff are calling "bullshit" on the perpetrator, with tremendous suspicion. They deal with violent offenders quite a lot. Aren't they trained to recognize "game"?
In a former life, I was a mental health technician at a New Jersey university's mental health center. I worked with adolescent (acute, and brief treatment), clients. One even attempted to remove my eye with a "spork", claiming "the Devil told him to do it"!
In fairness, it's hard to tell from television b-roll, the state of the individual. I am no psychiatrist or psychologist, but, in my experience, people truly suffering a psychotic break have a lot more ticks and "tells", if my memory serves. Since I am not qualified to offer anything more than a personal opinion, I will leave diagnoses to those trained to so so.
What i find captivating, however, is that this guy is presenting as a, sudden, amnesiac (which can happen after great shock and trauma), but my Spidey-senses are telling me to call "Shenanigans". I just think it's entirely too convenient. I am reminded of the old films and newsreels of killers (Wikipedia) such as: Ted Bundy, Charles Manson, David Berkowitz ("Son of Sam"), Jeffrey Dahmer, John Wayne Gacy, Ed Gein, Ronald Dominique and others (all of whom, I'm old enough to remember). Their illness was pretty evident and obvious--- even on television.
I really hope that the individual really is clinically, mentally ill. At least then, we might have some form of ability to hope to understand why the horrible tragedy occurred. There is no excuse for the murders, but an explanation might offer some modicum of closure.
What will really tick me off is if it turns out that this guy is just Narcissistic and delusional enough to believe that he can get away with anything... If he is mad enough to believe he can play this hand successfully... at the expense of the victims, survivors and their loved ones.
If he is not mentally ill, and is just playing an attempt at a bluff, i shudder to think what will happen to him. If he is ill, i hope he'll get the treatment he needs... though it is likely he will receive the death penalty. Either way, all around, it is all such a waste! The whole, awful, thing!
