This latest cadre of soulful spirits (Lake Street Dive) has captured the souls of those who came before them. As a man of a certain age, I listen to their fresh, rejuvenated covers with a wide-eyed, incredulous, chair-dancin' joy that some of my "old chestnuts" have been revived for a new generation! They demonstrate a command of subtle economy, and simmer, that impresses!
Take for example the sizzling, energetic, noble, authentic, New Orleans-style jazz, "Second-Line" treatment of George Michael's “Faith” (Below)! Outrageously, unexpectedly, supremely, outstanding! I just found the baby in the King Cake, y'all!
Their evident quest, is to breathe life into the the music of my youth! They choose songs that instantly resonate with an old-head like me. To give them new life. The entire ensemble have chops formidable enough to master the groove, and technically adroit enough to take up this challenge and slay it! I won't mention ALL the titles on this recording, because I want listeners to experience the nostalgia, and surprising resuscitations of the classic tunes, AND the magic, for the first-time listener--- as each precious blossom emerges! You will be pleasantly surprised, noob or not.
Every instrumentalist (which includes the vocalist) is conservatory-perfect, with attitude (the BEST kind) and skill to spare! The vocals are refreshingly genuine and unadorned, with a solid root, and a genuine respect for the art form. And, while there are moments of pitchiness, none of them are unforgivable... and to the average listener, undetectable (with respect: it's the attack--- often forced --- with more muscle than nuance on the breath). And... I thank the universe that there is no Auto-Tune within a thousand miles of them!
Amazingly-wise, old-souls (in newer bodies) --- the ensemble consists of vocalist Rachael Price, bassist Bridget Kearney, drummer Mike Calabrese, and trumpet-wielding guitarist Mike “McDuck” Olson. The only real adjectives for this collective are: Immaculate. Talented. Masterful. Qualified. Magnificent, and ferocious.
The arrangements are lush, succulent, hypnotic and, like the Ingenue, bombshell, goddess lead-singer (Price), so naturally, and irrepressably, and effortlessly sexy, that all this listener could do was say, a respectful “amen”. Every instrument is perfectly chosen, and entirely complementary to each other. There isn't an INCH of wasted space, or a weak link, in the fabric of what is their, singular, sound. Anywhere.
Nuance, finesse, “gravy”, prowess, knowledge, skill... THE recipe for hit musical recordings. You'd have quite the challenging hunt to source a bassist with the sultry, mean-assed line and precision of Kearney (I'd cut off an appendage to put her and Christian McBride in a room trading 8s), or a horn with the buttery, furious-yet-entirely-under-control, perfect runs of Olson--- tipping a hat to Miles and Dizzy and Wynton (OLDER than me!!!! :-P) Marsalis. Price's vocals are shockingly appealing and impressive, and the swagger in Calabrese's propellant, meticulous, studied, masterful time-keeping and texture-styling are hard to match.
I've heard it for free, but I'll be certain to purchase the album! These artists are creating the new (enhanced) Great American Songbook, based on songs which, to them, are “standards”, and “oldies”. This writer remembers them when they were just hitting the charts. I suspect I'm old enough to be any one of their fathers (#fossil)! This album MUST get to my playlist. NOW! And yours too, if you love yourself!
I need them to play my next, milestone, birthday party. They would please, absolutely “EERYONE” on my guest list--- young and old! Especially ME!
