"Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee has just signed the state’s marriage equality bill into law in a ceremony on the steps of the Rhode Island State House.
The bill passed the Rhode Island state House earlier today with bipartisan support."

This morning, I had a potentially explosive encounter with a strong-willed, dyed-in-the-wool, opponent of marriage equality. He shall remain nameless.
The end result, is that he and I have a standing appointment during which we will be able to discuss the matter fully--- without any such ridiculous, "Adam & Steve", "Marry my goat", "Multiple wives" drech. I am utterly convinced that he is a good man. A great dad and husband. But he is absolute in his position, and I rejoice in his right, and would give up a lot to protect his right, to have an opinion.
How fitting that after such a potentially unruly and unpleasant start to my day, that the icing has been applied to the marriage equality wedding cake, yet again!
Even TODAY, this morning, I had a tete-a-tete, with someone on facebook, about Marriage Equality:
Here's how the, redacted, conversation went:
**********: who is carrying these unborn twins of an unholy and impossible union and this is a good reason to keep this type of marriage off line where it belongs- the reason I'm not sad, God forgive me because in this overly screwed up world this is is a cruel joke!

**********: what concept of equality are you talking about?

Marcinho Friend Savant: Oh yes, Mr **********...
The apocalypse is upon us. EEEEK!
Two same gender people wed... = end of the world. Been going on since Socrates... But the sun continues to rise! No?...
Nothing new. And, with all due respect, absolutely NOTHING, whatsoever, to do with equality. Under. The LAW.
Under said law, everyone within our borders--- including you--- is entitled to love. Why shouldn't LGBT PEOPLE?
The polygamy/bigamy "argument" rhetoric is garish spurious tripe, and rather pathetic on its face.
If people hate spinach, they don't EAT IT. Similarly, people opposed to same-gender marriage... They don't HAVE one.

**********: la ti do all day long- marriage is still a union between a man and a woman, and any other is still not a more perfect union- la ti do or not! By the way Mr Savant did those two male sperm cells create those twins?

Marcinho Friend Savant: Good morning Mr. ********** !!!
What a beautiful family in your pic! Kudos! I commend your staunch, devoted, opinion, and your right to have it. Even though I might not agree with it, I'm flexible enough to recognize that there are no absolutes, just because one invokes them. I will no longer comment on this thread, as it isn't my wall, however...
Since you asked: " la ti do all day long- marriage is still a union between a man and a woman, and any other is still not a more perfect union- la ti do or not! By the way Mr Savant did those two male sperm cells create those twins?"
The appropriate answer to your question is, that I don't know if two spermatazoa did or didn't..., as I am not a geneticist, nor an OB/GYN. But I DO know so many same-gender couples raising gorgeous, glorious, sane, loving children (most of whom, according to the odds, turn out to be STRAIGHT, despite their environment).
What I DO know, is that G-D made not one of us capable to judge another. It is up to G-D to do the work that is His to do. Here's what else I know:
- 1. There are None So Blind As Those Who Will Not See.
- 2. Demise? Schmemise! Gay unions have been going on for millennia. This issue didn't begin last Thursday. Yet We're. Still. HERE! In 10,000 YEARS of human civilization (yep... gays existed then), the sky has still not fallen, dogma be damned.
- 3. Never try to teach a pig to sing! It wastes your time, and it annoys the Pig. - "The Adventures of Mark Twain" (NOT calling anyone a PIG!!!!! Just commenting on the futility of the act).
- 4. WE ALL KNOW that gay people make THEMSELVES gay... because we ALSO know that straight parents ONLY produce STRAIGHT children!
- 5. A new day of equality has dawned. Those relics unable, or unwilling, to evolve, will go down with the ship.
I have nothing more to say on the matter, hence, I respectfully leave my friend's thread.
Have a magnificent day, Sir...
**********: Since the conversation has continued thus far in a respectful and civilized way I will neither argue or reason with the subject any further, and hope my comments were not too heavy an imposition on anyone's sensibilities. The issue is complex and people have different views in the same communities, families and households, and my opinion is as complex as the issues. i mean no personal insult, and I am very open to all arguments on every issue. The answers to this subject is equally complex, but some other time for now.
Marcinho Friend Savant: I treasure your opinions. I celebrate your right to have them! Just because I believe a train is a cow, because i am convinced it IS so, doesn't make it so.
In ANY case, I'm very happy to discuss the matter with you any time you so desire, kind Sir. Perhaps over an, ANCIENT, Single-Malt or snifter of cognac? I like your style. Take care!

**********: to life...and your choice of drinks
Marcinho Friend Savant: A dank! L'Chaim!
Don't get me started though! I SPEAK Yiddish! ROFLMBO!!!!!!!!!!!! "
So what's it all about!
Rhode Island, tiny, gorgeous, heroic, brave Rhode Island, has placed another nail in the coffin lid of inequality!
People such as "Mr. X" are born of a time when this entire discussion would never have even taken place! It would have been joked about. It would have been cheapened. It would have likely led to fighting.
But Mr. X, and those of his ouvre, and MANY people of a certain generation, are in need of a little more time to adjust.
In my discussion, i resolutely, yet politely, deflated the rhetoric and hyperbole, in the desperate, and necessary, requirement for civil discussion. In the end, this man embraced the tone. He recognized me as a sane, logical, non-threatening person. He ceased to see me as "OTHER", and saw me as a human being.
So for today, I'm ecstatic for Rhode Island! But I'm also deliriously happy that another bridge to understanding, even if only one person on a social media site, has been forged.
I feel that without all the righteous indignation... in civil tones, my "opponent" heard my side of the argument, really heard it... instead of taking the easy, blusterous route of attack and counter-attack.
It is going to take some people more time to ACCEPT, equality at it's core.
We may not be able to instantly teach certain people new tricks, but I believe that, barring the lock-step, bigoted relics of this planet, logical, sane, open-hearted people will finally get it. Change isn't EASY! But Change is All Right!
Haters cannot un-spill milk! Equality for all has been tasted, and that taste--- in the states, countries and district, that have savored it--- can never be untasted.
There is no gray area in equality! Marriage equality now.
